How to get there and where to stay in Phong Nha
Most travelers arrive in Phong Nha by night bus. If you are coming from the north (for example, from the stunning landscapes of Ninh Binh), there are comfortable buses that leave at 6:30 p.m. and drop you right in the center of Phong Nha town in the early hours of the morning (around 1:30 a.m.).

The essential caves of Phong Nha: A journey to the center of the Earth
The underground of Phong Nha is a colossal labyrinth of underground galleries, rock cathedrals and rivers of crystal clear water. These are the caves you can’t miss:
1. Paradise Cave (Paradise Cave / Hang Thien Duong)
Considered by many to be the most beautiful dry cave in the region. Paradise Cave has a total length of 31 kilometers, although ordinary tourists can only travel the first kilometer through a spectacular, very well-equipped wooden walkway. The scale of this cave is simply unimaginable: its ceilings reach heights of up to 72 meters.
Practical information:The entrance fee is around €10 (about 250,000 VND). Opening hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We recommend you go early to avoid the crowds of the organized tours and enjoy the mystical silence of its interior.
2. Phong Nha Cave (The Underground River Cave)
This cave gives its name to the entire national park and is visited in a very special way: on a traditional motor boat. The journey begins at the pier in the town of Phong Nha and navigates along the Son River until it literally enters the mouth of the mountain. Once inside, the boatmen turn off the engines and paddle in silence so you can contemplate the whimsical shapes of the artificially illuminated rock.
Prices:The individual ticket costs about €6 (150,000 VND), to which you must add the cost of the boat (approximately €5 or 120,000 VND), which can be shared between several travelers (up to 12 people per boat) to reduce costs.
3. Dark Cave (Hang Toi): Adventure and adrenaline
If you are looking for an active and fun experience, Dark Cave is your place. To access it you must jump on a giant zip line over the river, paddle a kayak to the entrance and enter the absolute darkness of the cave equipped only with a helmet and a headlamp. The main course? A restorative bath in a dense natural mud pit in the heart of the mountain.
Price:The complete adventure pack (zip line, mud, kayak and equipment) costs about €8 (200,000 VND). The hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
4. Other notable caves
- Tien Son Cave:Located just above Phong Nha Cave (a combined ticket is usually offered). It has spectacular rock formations of great geological value.
- Son Doong:The jewel in the crown. It is officially the largest cave in the world (an entire neighborhood of skyscrapers can fit inside!). However, their access is strictly limited to scientific and luxury expeditions that cost about $3,000 per person with months (or years) of waiting lists.
