Full Guide

First, although I will mention the routes I made, I recommend you to visit this website to see its state, as the orography of the island is complicated and sometimes there are detachment that causes routes to close:State of the trails – Network of trails of La Palma. Another option is to call the phone of the Cabildo de la Palma, which comes to be like the Government of the island:922 423 100.

I actually couldn’t visit the route of Marcos and Cordero for detachment.

Day 1:

The first thing I visited in close proximity to my accommodation was the village of Santa Cruz de la Palma, which impressed me very much, the balconies and decorations are very beautiful and different to what was used to the Iberian Peninsula:

There are few streets that go very fast. You can also see the statue of Cristóbal Colón, in front of the Naval Museum of Santa Cruz de la Palma.

Very close to Santa Cruz de la Palma, we have the beach of the Cancajos, which is a beautiful beach of volcanic black sand.

Day 2:

The next day we went south, where we could see the crater of the San Antonio volcano. It’s the only place I went where I had to pay, I put the prices and schedules at the top of the entrance.

From this huge crater, you can see the Teneguía volcano:

From the volcano you can see the salins of Fuenhot, which are a few minutes by car:

Day 3:

On the third day I went to realize the route of the Cube de la Galga, which is a beautiful route on which we entered a forest of Laurisilva. In the Virtual Reality section I will show you a video in which you will see the impressive of this forest.

As we reach the top of the route, we have the High Somada Mirador, from which you can already see the ocean.

Later, we went to see the Cascade of the Tilos, which is near the route of the Galga Cube. The waterfall has the parking lot a few meters away. You just have to walk through a very nice passage and go through a mini stone passage and we’ll immediately see the waterfall:

Day 4:

We go to the National Park of La Caldera de Taburiente, where we have a route that ends in its famous waterfall of colors. Watch out for the arrival road at the start of the route, get on each curve and go slowly, as it is very narrow.

On the way you will see the characteristic color that water collects due to the minerals that abound in the area.

Finally, the waterfall, which at the time I was not very full and I could not see as much water of color as on the way but it was worth it.

At the end of the day, I went up to the Roque de los Muchachos, from where you can see a beautiful sunset and you can even see the other islands nearby.

We will also see from the top the telescopes of the astronomical observatory.

Council:

If you go along the road, you can imagine how much gunpowder they have had to use to make the roads and roads. This involves risks from the breakout, I recommend you go with caution on the road, above all, slow down on the curves and areas of reduced visibility. On my journey, on the rise to the Roque of the Boys, behind a curve there was a huge rock in our lane and we had to invade the opposite lane with caution to avoid it.

Additional sites to see

  • Marcos and Lamb: as I have told you before, you better call the phone numbers to see if you can make the route. I was going to do this route, but I couldn’t do it for a break-out.
  • Poris de la Candelaria: because it is located an hour and a half from Santa Cruz de la Palma, which is where I stayed and was practically the most remote point of the island from where I was from, I decided to prioritize places closer. It consists of…

I hope I can return to this beautiful island and update you with my experience about these places.

Car rental

If you go to the Canary Islands, renting car is practically a need to see everything. There are many car rental options that you can take at the airport just after you arrive, but I recommend you book them earlier so you don’t have anything left.

There are the typical options for Europcar, Pepecar, Autoreisen… but the cheapest in the Canary Islands areCycleandCabrera Medina(they belong to the same company). Besides being the cheapest, they have 100% insurance all risk without franchise, additional free driver and unlimited mileage. In the post of Tenerife and Fuerteventura I will tell you about prices that I paid for since in La Palma I took the car of a friend.

Inter-island travel

After I was in Palma, I traveled to Tenerife. The fastest way to travel between islands is usually by plane. The cheapest companies to travel between the Canary Islands areBinterandCanaryfly. They are the cheapest as they are subsidized by the Government to save the canaries the travel, bear in mind that many have to change the island daily for work reasons.
