Goya and the Hermites of San Antonio de la Florida

Madrid is a city full of secrets and curiosities, and one of the most fascinating is in the Glorieta of San Antonio de la Florida: two twin hermites that, in plain sight, seem identical, but that hide different stories and purposes. One of them also houses one of the masterpieces of the Aragonese genius Francisco de Goya.

The Origin of the German Ermites and their relationship with Goya

The first hermitage, known asHermitage of San Antonio de la FloridaIt was built between 1792 and 1798 under the reign of Charles IV. Designed by the architect Felipe Fontana, its neoclassical style is sober and elegant, but what really makes it special is its interior. In 1798, Goya was responsible for decorating the dome and walls with frescoes that narrate the life of San Antonio de Padua. These paintings, considered one of the summits of Spanish art, show Goya’s mastery in the use of light, movement and expression.

However, in 1928, in order to preserve the frescoes of Goya and to avoid their deterioration by the liturgical use, a second identical hermitage was built next to the original. This new hermitage assumed religious functions, while the former became a museum dedicated to the art of Goya.

The Art of Goya in the Original Hermitage

Goya’s frescoes in the original hermitage are a show that leaves no one indifferent. The dome represents the miracle of St. Anthony, who resurrects a man to prove his innocence. Goya portrayed the characters with an impressive realism, inspired by the common people of his time. This innovative approach and its ability to capture the human essence make this work a unique artistic treasure.
